What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing refers to anything that involves offering hosted services via the Internet. These services fall into one of three main categories under cloud computing: infrastructure as a service, platform as a service (PaaS), or software as a service.

A cloud may be public or private. Services are sold online to anybody by a public cloud. A private cloud is a proprietary network or data centre that offers hosted services with specific access and authorization settings to a small group of users. Whether personal or public, cloud computing aims to provide accessible, scalable access to computer resources and IT services.

Different types of cloud computing services

Three broad service delivery categories, or types of cloud computing, may be distinguished from one another:

IaaS:

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers, like Amazon Web Services (AWS), offer storage and virtual server instances in addition to application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable customers to move workloads to virtual machines (VMs). Users may launch, stop, access, and configure the virtual machine (VM) and storage as they see fit. They are also allotted a certain amount of storage. IaaS providers allow, for instance, customization and offer small, medium, significant, extra-large, memory- or compute-optimized instances for different workload requirements. The IaaS cloud concept is similar to a remote data center for commercial customers.

PaaS:

Cloud providers provide infrastructure development tools under the PaaS concept. Users may access these tools online using web portals, gateway software, or APIs. PaaS is used for general software development, and when the program is built, it is hosted by several PaaS providers. AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Google App Engine, and Salesforce’s Lightning Platform are examples of typical PaaS offerings.

SaaS:

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a distribution paradigm that uses the Internet to offer software applications, often web services. Users may access SaaS apps and services from any location using a PC or mobile device with internet connectivity. Under the SaaS model, users have access to databases and application software. Microsoft 365 is a well-known SaaS platform that offers email and productivity features.

Future of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing has a bright future because of ongoing innovation and technological improvements. The advantages of cloud computing will keep reshaping the digital environment. Emerging ideas like edge computing and multi-cloud architectures are being added to the three primary categories of cloud computing: public, private, and hybrid.

By bringing processing power closer to data sources, edge computing lowers latency and allows for real-time applications. Through multi-cloud architectures, organisations may leverage services from many cloud providers to improve cost, performance, and flexibility.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will play a significant role in cloud computing in the future, with cloud platforms offering scalable and easily accessible AI and ML capabilities.
